I woke up feeling much improved today and to celebrate this turnaround in my health, I took my two dogs for a walk.
In the past, when I’d go for a walk with the dogs, I’d spend the majority of the time thinking about all the things I had to do when I got home, going over past events or worrying about the future. I was so lost in the chattering of my mind that I couldn’t have told you about any of the things I’d seen or heard along the way.
Sometimes, I surprised myself by arriving home and realised I had been thinking my way round the whole walk and not noticed anything. It’s kind of like when you’re driving somewhere and you suddenly realise you’ve reached your destination and you’re not entirely sure how you got there.
But, today I did things a little differently.
As I walked this morning, I noticed the pretty wildflowers making their return to the countryside after the long, hot summer and the colourful butterflies flitting to and fro. A huge, red dragonfly darted past me, as I listened to a variety of bird calls and smelt the rather delicious aroma of the wild rosemary. And it gave me great joy to watch my dogs, as they sniffed bushes enthusiastically and raced after each other – they were having so much fun!
I felt peaceful, happy and so very thankful. And then it occurred to me that this wonderful feeling is called living in the present!
Day 290, Reason 290: Today I am so very happy and grateful to have been truly present on my walk with the dogs.
